Microbiology department was established in year 2009. The department is committed to high quality teaching in Microbiology to undergraduates (MBBS, BDS, Allied Health Sciences, Nursing), postgraduates MD (Microbiology) and to aid in diagnostic services and research. The aim is to provide an insight about aetiology, pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis, treatment and control of infections in the community. Department investigate outbreaks in the community, helps in planning preventive steps and measures to control epidemics in coordination with clinical departments.
The department has necessary teaching learning facilities for undergraduates as well as postgraduates as per MCI norms. Teaching facilities consists of well-equipped student’s laboratory, ICT enabled demonstration halls with Wi-Fi facility, museum, library and research laboratories. Department houses spacious museum with models and charts developed by students about bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology and immunology.
Students are encouraged to involve themselves in various research activities like ICMR-STS projects. In last 5 years 5 projects has been approved for ICMR-STS. Undergraduates and postgraduates also participate in various CME/conferences and won prizes for best poster/ best paper.
Hand hygiene and Bio-Medical waste management sensitization programmes are conducted for medical students, interns and staff nurses at regular intervals. Our clinical laboratory is NABL ISO 15189: 2012 accredited since October 2019. The department participates regularly in EQAS programme conducted by IAMM CMC Vellore. The department actively takes part in Infection control and Surveillance activities and help in formulating antibiotic policy for hospital.
Research interests of faculty is primarily focused on different areas such as antimicrobial resistance (phenotypic and genotypic methods), mycology and immunology.
